Body of Christian man exhumed after 10 months and reburied in Christian cemetery

(IsraelWire-2/4) Acre burial society officials on Tuesday exhumed the body of an elderly man who was interred ten months ago in the Jewish cemetery. At the time of the funeral, the man was believed to have been a Jew but it has since been learned that he was a Christian and was re-interred in the local Christian cemetery.

The Acre man who immigrated to Israel from Hungary in 1957, died at the age of 87, and was buried in the local Jewish cemetery. After an inquiry conducted by the Ministry of the Interior revealed the man was a Christian and not a Jew, the chief rabbi of Acre was consulted who in turn referred the question to Chief Sephardic Rabbi Eliyahu Bakshi-Doron, who ordered the body exhumed and removed from the Jewish cemetery and buried in a Christian cemetery.

The reburial took place on Tuesday in the presence of a Catholic clergyman.
